Sou EP

Vanessa Castro

composed between 2017 and 2020, sou layers loops of lush guitar and percussion with castro’s introspective lyrics and a variety of synths, both analog and digital. drawing inspiration from the brazilian music of her childhood, as well as electronic and dance music, castro sings in both portuguese and english to chronicle the spaces between self and other, past and present, and the real and imaginary. the result is a bricolage of pine trees, tropical plants, and weeds bursting through concrete; a collage of the mountains of minas gerais, the view outside castro’s bedroom window in ridgewood, queens, and the forests of haukijärvi, finland, where many of the lyrics were written during a residency in 2019.

On the shores of a lagoon filled with toxic diatoms, an A.G.I., which exists only in a seaside institute and has no embodied form, takes care of a genetically modified manatee that is resistant to the neurotoxin of pseudo-nitzschia. The narrative starts from the microstructure of the algae, which is similar to the storage medium "punched card" used by early Analytical Engine, and explores the love and gap between us and other species.

IM Motors worked with Totalab, collaborating artist Fei Yining to jointly launch its first NFT “IM Crossing: The New Totem,” a community-generated artwork with IM car owners. The score was inspired by Eastern and Western string instruments and rolling hills to provide a calming sonic landscape to the virtual world Yining had created.
